The ink had not dried. That was what she noticed first — not the hands folded across the chest, not the blankets someone had arranged, not the absence of breath in a room shaped by his breathing for thirty years.

She found Lin Guowei on the third day. He was sitting on the stone embankment at Xiangshan, eating a bowl of congee with the unhurried attention of a man who had nowhere particular to be.

The Fang compound sat at the bottom of a valley that did not appear on any chart Marta had ever seen. This was not an oversight.

Zhao Wenqi lived in two rooms above a rice shop on the main street of a town whose name Marta never learned. Lin called it the market town — it sat where the river road met the mountain road, and everything that passed between coast and interior passed through it.

The Chen household was the last stop before the mountain crossing into Fuzhou prefecture. "Chen Bohai and his wife, Chen Mei," Lin said.

Three days out of the pass the terrain leveled into river country — limestone hills, wider roads, more traffic. The checkpoint sat where the valley narrowed between two outcrops and the only passage was a stone bridge, old and well-maintained, wide enough for a single cart.

The town was called Nanping, and it sat where the Jian River met the Min — a convergence of water and commerce that had made it, for three centuries, the place where goods changed hands, carriers, and price.

The second checkpoint caught her two days from Fuzhou, on the mountain road where the Daiyun pass descended into the river valley. Lin was not with her.
